The issue:

Static charge build up on shop-floor personnel is more noticeable during cold and dry or less  humid days. An electrostatic discharge (ESD) occurs when this excess charge seeks to  neutralise itself by jumping from the person to an electrically conductive material, typically with a spark and a consequent small shock. Apart from discomfort to the operator, such electrostatic discharges with sparks can pose safety risks in industrial settings where the atmosphere is  combustible.   

The remedy:
